Moving into halls of residence is an exciting step, often marking the beginning of your independent journey. But we are totally aware that living in halls can also be a bit daunting!

But that’s totally okay – we’ve got you covered with this ultimate guide to surviving (and thriving) in halls!

1. Get to Know Your Roommates

Your roommates can become your best friends or just acquaintances, but either way, establishing a good relationship early on is crucial.

Start with a friendly introduction and organize a group activity like a meal together or a movie night. Our top tip is to leave your door propped open, so your roommates know they can pop in and say hi!

Open communication is key—discuss shared responsibilities, cleaning schedules, and ground rules to ensure everyone is on the same page.

2. Personalize Your Space

You should absolutely make your room feel like home by personalizing it with decorations, photos, and items that transform this space into your own!

Not only will this make your room more inviting, but it can also help alleviate homesickness.

Remember, you don’t need to spend a fortune—DIY decorations or budget-friendly finds can do wonders! And command strips are your best friend.

3. Stay Organized

University life is busy, and it’s easy to let things pile up…

Grab yourself a calendar, some desk organizers, and a wastepaper bin, and you’re off to a great start!

Also, having a regular declutter of your room should help to create a comfortable environment for both relaxing and studying in! So, try and do this little and often to save yourself time.

4. Master the Art of Cooking

Relying on takeaways and Pot Noodles (other noodle brands are available) can get old and unhealthy, fast. If you haven’t cooked much independently before, halls are a great opportunity to learn a few simple meals!

Cooking for yourself is often far cheaper and healthier, and it’s a great way to impress your roommates! Why not head on over to BBC Goodfoods and see what tickles your tastebuds?

So go on, it’s time to unlock your inner Gordon Ramsey!

Just with a bit less shouting…

5. Balance Socialising and Studying

Halls are social hubs with plenty of opportunities to make friends and enjoy social activities. However, balancing this with your academic responsibilities is key.

Our top tip is to create a study schedule and stick to it, whilst also making time for socialising to avoid burnout. Societies and sports clubs will help for this.

It’s all about BALANCE!

6. Utilize Campus Resources

Your Students’ Union offers numerous resources to help you succeed, so why not familiarise yourself with our Advice Centre?

Many halls also have resident advisors who can provide support and guidance. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you need help!

7. Respect Shared Spaces

Living with others means sharing common areas like the kitchen, bathroom, and lounge.

To prevent any conflicts and create a harmonious living environment, always clean up after yourself and respect others' space and belongings.

Cleaning rotas can also come in super handy!

8. Stay Safe

It’s super basic stuff really, but you can help to ensure your safety by locking your doors and keeping valuables secure.

You should also familiarise yourself with emergency procedures and contacts – your halls should share these with you when you move in!

Additionally, get to know your neighbours—they can look out for you and vice versa (as well as making more friends!)

9. Manage Homesickness

Feeling homesick is totally normal! But it can help to stay connected with family and friends back home, calling as well as messaging!

Keeping busy and engaged can also help ease the transition, so why not join some clubs or societies that interest you?

10. Enjoy the Experience

Lastly, enjoy your time in halls! This is a unique period in your life filled with opportunities for personal growth and new experiences.

It won’t always be perfect, so embrace the ups and downs, learn from challenges, and make the most of every moment.

With these tips, we hope that you’ll not only survive but THRIVE in your new home! Good luck, and welcome to university life!
