Starting university is super exciting, but if you’re commuting, it can come with a few extra challenges…

But don’t worry! We’ve got some great tips to help you rock your first year and make the most out of your uni experience, even if you’re not living on campus!

Nail Your Commute

First things first, it’s time to get to know your route like the back of your hand.

Whether you’re driving, biking, or hopping on the bus (did you know the 50 is free between campuses?), it might be worth doing a couple of practice runs before your first day. This way, you’ll know how long it really takes and can plan for any unexpected delays.

Oh, and always have a backup plan in case things go sideways! Hopefully it’s not your bike going sideways, mind…

Stay on Top of Things

Being a commuter means staying organised is key – even more so than residential students!

Grab yourself a planner or use a calendar app to keep track of your classes and social activities and plan your study time around your commute to make the best use of your day.

Also, one of our super easy top tips – pack your bag the night so you’re ready to roll in the morning!

Make Friends and Get Involved

Just because you’re commuting doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the social scene!

Join our sports clubs and societies to meet new people and get involved in campus events and make use of social spaces between classes.

Find Your Study Spot

Even if you don’t have a room on campus, it’s important to have a great study space at home. So, make it comfy and free from distractions!

Check out on-campus spots like the library or our Wellbeing Hub in the SU for a change of scenery and a quiet place to hit the books between classes.

Stay in the Loop

Keep up with all the most important updates through @SalfordSU on socials and through your student email. We’ll help you feel even more connected!

Go with the Flow

Lastly, be flexible and ready to adapt. Commuting can be super unpredictable, but with a positive attitude and some preparation, you’ll handle whatever comes your way!

Key things to remember…

  • Look at rail cards as these can cut the cost of train journeys.
  • There’s an array of car parks surrounding the university campuses depending on which is nearest to where you need to be.
  • The number 50 bus is FREE for all Salford Students to and from the Media City and Peel Park campus.

Starting uni as a commuter student might have its challenges, but it also has some GREAT perks. So be sure embrace this new journey with confidence and remember – your SU will be here to support you!
