Thriving Abroad: A Practical Guide for International Students

news

Being an international student is always somewhat challenging – you’re away from home, in a new culture, maybe speaking a new language, and it takes time to adjust. And while we're already near the end of the academic year, the challenge is always present.

Lucky for you, I’m also an international student! So, here's my personal take on a survival guide as an international student.

Keep in touch

You probably moved away to gain independence and make your own experiences. But missing people back home? That's completely valid and okay, So, don’t be afraid to call!

Scheduling regular calls, whether it is a daily, weekly or monthly update, can help you stay connected with everything back home. It's a great way to avoid feeling lonely and maintain those important relationships.

Bring some of home with you

It's harder to miss home when you're surrounded by things that remind you of it. Maybe you packed clothes, photos, and a few decorations – but you know what helps most? FOOD.

We've all had that moment where we crave that specific meal or snack, only to realise... it's not sold here! So next time you visit home, bring a suitcase and fill it up. Snacks, drinks, ingredients... whatever you're allowed to bring back, BRING IT!

These little comforts are great for when you're feeling homesick, or even as daily reminders of home. You might even find some of them here if you explore enough, but it's good to stock up just in case.

Find a support network

Moving abroad can feel a bit isolating, and locals might not relate to your experience. But if there's one thing I learned, it's that someone, somewhere, always says: "ohhh the friend of my friend has also moved to the same city!"

It might feel daunting to reach out, but trust me, this is the best way to do it. Even if you don't become best friends, they might introduce you to others or share useful tips. Having people who understand what you're going through, especially culturally, makes a big difference.

Events, events and events!

"But, what if no one I know has a connection in Manchester?" Don't worry, that's what events are for!

We run lots of free events throughout the year – check them out here! You can also join one of our many societies. We've got groups based on all kinds of interests and activities – check them out here!

Looking for something more international?

The International Community at Salford meets every Thursday from 5pm – 6.30pm in Lewis Latimer Meeting Room, Northside of University House.

The University of Manchester's International Society is open to everyone, regardless of your university. For just £20 a year, you can join weekly sessions, trips, and other planned events!. Check them out here.

If you miss hearing music from home when you go out, International Social hosts events featuring music from all over the world! It's a great way to meet others, and they often collaborate with other cultural societies – you might even find a group from your own country. From personal experience: even if you're not from the same university, you're always welcome!

Get out there!

I know it’s tempting to stay in your room when you're feeling down (been there, done that). But honestly? That won't help you feel more comfortable being on your own.

It's easier said than done, but get out there! Even if you're not meeting up with anyone, now that the weather's getting better, go for a walk, explore Salford or Manchester, try a new café, or do some window shopping.

There is a beauty on walking around and exploring on your own – you'll start to feel more at home and appreciate the place where you are now, helping you feel much more comfortable.

Enjoy the ride

Stay true to the reason why you moved abroad. Was it for better opportunities? New experiences? Starting from scratch? Wanting to explore the world? Whatever your reason, it was strong enough to bring you here, and that's something to be proud of.

The journey might not have been easy, but look how far you've come! Keep your original goal in mind. Things may not always go perfectly, but as long you keep going, it will all fall into place.

So be confident in your decision and yourself. You got this!

Hopefully this helps you to have a better time being away from home. I know I’ve said it multiple times already but trust me it will all turn out okay. It might be a challenge but at the end of the day it will be so worth it. Keep going, trust yourself and make your best effort!
