Changes to the Student Rep System

This area of the website is a dedicated space for Programme Leaders, Subject Leads and Directors to access all written guidance and recruitment resources needed for the year ahead. If there is anything further that you would like us to provide, please contact student-representation@salford.ac.uk.

September Recruitment

The start of a new academic year is our busiest time for course rep recruitment. With new and returning students back on campus and online for a new year of teaching, we need a volunteer from each year of each course to be registered to represent their cohort as a course rep.

Please promote the course rep role utilising the resources provided. The role of course rep provides fantastic social and personal development opportunities, so make sure to shout about these when calling on your cohort to select their representative.

In any instance where more than one student wants to represent their cohort, we recommend holding a vote to see which candidate has the consensus of their peers. If you as a Progamme Leader are happy to offer the opportunity to more than one rep, we allow you the discretion to do so long as multiple course reps work together to jointly represent their peers.

The deadline for recruitment is Week 4 of Trimester 1 which will be Monday 4th October 2024 in the current academic year. Register your course rep via the form linked here

However, course reps can be recruited after October 4th if vacancies remain, but we time the delivery of our in-person and online training sessions for course reps to fall directly after the October 4th deadline. If any reps are registered after this period, we can provide them with all the required onboarding to ensure they are trained and supported throughout their tenure as course reps.

January Recruitment

Thank you again for continuing with Rep recruitment. If your programme's start date is in January, or another time of the year, please do still promote the opportunity for students to become Course Reps with your cohort. Here are some more details regarding January recruitment:

  • If any vacant Course Rep positions from September have now been filled, please also register these students.
  • A range of recruitment materials can be found at the bottom of this page.
  • Please note that School Rep recruitment (more senior Reps who are responsible for subject groups) has now closed for the 2023/24 academic year. The next round of recruitment for the 2024/25 academic year will begin in the spring.
  • Once Course Reps are registered with the Students' Union they will be contacted over email and given access to a recorded version of the training. Registered Reps are contacted periodically, so it might take up to 5 working days for them to gain access to the training.
  • The registration form will remain open throughout the year for non-Sep start dates.

Resources

For both Course Rep and School Rep recruitment, there are a variety of resources available. Notes are included on each slide so you can use them for live recruitment in lectures, or as a stand-alone resource on Blackboard.
