Thank you for your interest in becoming a School Rep for 2024/25. School Reps ensure that student issues and concerns are raised and dealt with at an appropriate level within their Directorate, attending senior meetings in the School. They work with Course Reps and their School's Officer to improve the student experience for those studying within their School. The School Rep role provides more responsibility and a senior oversight of the subjects that fit into your area. The School Rep role works closely with the Course Reps they oversee to look for patterns & trends at the University.
What does it involve?
- School Reps act as the senior Rep for their subject group, looking for patterns in student feedback across several programmes.
- They act as the point of contact between all Course Representatives in their department and their Director/Subject Lead.
- School Reps represent students on senior University committees & panels, such as the School Learning & Teaching Committee, Student Facing Procedures, and Programme Review & Approval Panels.
- They run campaigns & projects based on student feedback coming through, and can turn action into policy for Academic Exec.
- They work with other School Reps to conduct further research into school-wide issues which they present to their Head of School.
- School Reps will develop good interpersonal skills, the ability to critically appraise and analyse data, and have a good understanding of the issues facing students within their school.
- School Reps also act as Library Champions. This involves working with The Library on projects, new initiatives and service development, and helping develop library collections through the Library Champion fund.
- Meet and work with the Sabbatical Officer team regularly, on their upcoming campaigns and projects.
What will I gain?
School Reps gain demonstrable experience in key employability skills including communication, organisation and planning, digital enagement, negotiation, and much more. Ultimately, you'll be making a positive impact on the experiences of your peers and future students within your School. You will also gain access to:
- Training and development opportunities to gain skills like negotiation, problem solving, and mediation.
- Exposure to senior decision makers with the Union and University.
- Acting as the representative for your peers.
- The opportunity to be a Library Champion giving you the chance to work collaboratively with The Library on a range of projects and make a real difference for the students you represent.
- Access to a rewards system.
Students can nominate themselves for the relevant position in their School based on which department their course sits within when applications are open. If you are unsure which department you belong to in your School, please email student-representation@salford.ac.uk and we can let you know.
