What are Student Officers?!

 

There are five full time elected student officer positions, all paying £24,484.73 for a 12-month period beginning on 1st July. These positions include one Students’ Union President and four Students’ Union Officers.

There are five separate elections:

  • President
  • Arts and Media Officer
  • Health and Social Care Officer
  • Science and Technology Officer
  • Business and Law Officer

 

All Roles

You will lead the Union, ensuring it is representing students and campaigning to improve the life of students at Salford. You will also be a member of the Trustee Board, which is responsible for holding staff to account and overseeing the Union finances to make sure money is spent so it benefits students. You will work with the Union's staff team to promote student interest in all Union activities and events, including a varied social calendar.

 

Students' Union President

As President you will chair the trustee board of the Students’ Union and lead the Student Officer team, championing and supporting their work. You will be the key contact with the University Vice Chancellor and the National Union of Students and will work on cross-institutional issues. You will be the spokesperson of the Students’ Union to the wider community and other external contacts (e.g. the press).

 

Officers

As an Officer, you will represent students within one or more of the Universities schools (e.g. Arts and Media, Business etc.) and lead the campaigns, democracy, and representation in that area – holding key relationships with senior staff and students.

You will also take responsibility for an area of the Union's strategic work e.g. sport and activities, community engagement, wellbeing and support, representation and democracy etc. These will be chosen internally by the successful candidates after the election.

Pay

You will be paid £24,484 for 12 months from the 1st July 2025 with a flexible annual leave policy as well as University closure days. There can be some flexibility in start dates for some students e.g. nurses.

Making a difference

You'll get to work for a year on the issues that matter to students and can make big changes that will impact on the lives of students.

 

Experience

Leading a charitable organisation with a budget of over £1million will give you valuable commercial experience. You'll also gain experience in; leading campaigns, representing students, managing budgets, communicating and team building.

 

Being a Trustee

In your role as a trustee of a charity you'll gain valuable insight into how our organisation works and make real decisions that shape our future.
