If something serious came up that stopped you from turning in your assessment on time, or if you had to submit it after the deadline in the late submission period, you can follow the Personal Mitigating Circumstances (PMC) procedure. This could be an illness or a personal issue. This only covers one off events or circumstance. If there is something ongoing affecting your studies, get in touch with us for additional support.

Important points to consider:

  • Late-submission or non-submission PMC? If you apply for removal of late submission penalties, this means you need to submit within 7 days of your deadline. If you won’t be able to do that, then a non-submission PMC may be more appropriate. Keep in mind that this could affect your graduation date or visa if you are an international student. If you are considering a non-submission PMC, you should speak to a Students’ Union Advisor.
  • With or without evidence? If you can get evidence of your mitigating circumstances, you should use it. This is because you can only have one evidence based PMC per trimester, and you might need it for something urgent later.
  • With or without evidence? If you can get evidence of your mitigating circumstances, you should use it. This is because you can only have one evidence based PMC per trimester, and you might need it for something urgent later.
  • If in doubt, speak to someone: You can book an appointment with a Students’ Union Advisor.

Scenario example

This is an example scenario for students appealing based on Personal Mitigating Circumstances that meant they could not submit their assignment. If you need additional support or you have another ground for appeal would like to speak to an adviser, you can book an appointment with the Advice Centre using the following link: Book an Appointment.

Scenario 1 – Appeal for another attempt at an assignment based on Personal Mitigating Circumstances

Jordan had an assignment due on 17th November 2023. On the 14th November, Jordan was involved in a car accident and had to spent several nights in hospital. The injuries made day to day activities difficult. When they left hospital, they spent some time with their family while they recovered.

It was their second attempt at the assignment, and they did not submit a Personal Mitigating Circumstances request. They have discharge papers which show they were in hospital from the 14th November – 20th November 2023.

They received their results letter on 5th January 2024 and they would like to make an Academic Appeal for another attempt at their assignment.
